Desaturate an image

Jake G.

Turning a color image into an Achromatic (black, white and grey tones) image by desaturating (pulling the stauration or intensity of the color out).

In PhotoShop you can pull the color out little by little leaving you with some low intensity (desaturated) color. This would not be Achromatic however.

To do this in PhotoShop go to Image Menu>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation> lower the slider or number for saturation. This will "pull" the intensity from the colors.

Below I've enter a -75 for Hanna L.'s brightly colored image from Module 2 and this is the resulting image.

Toning an image

Sarah G.

Toning is the same as turning an image into a monochromatic (various values of one color) image. You first need to follow the steps for the desaturation of an image. The rest of the steps for this assignment are on the Toning Page

Layer Modes
As you saw when following the directions for toning an image there are a number of Layer Modes as time allows experiment with these options. When you get to Module 11 you will be using the Colorizing Layer Mode to create a Pseudo Watercolor

Module Seven Assignments:

  1. Open an image in Photoshop, rename it and save it as a .psd (photoshop document) in your network folder or on your Flash drive. Have me come to your computer when you have completed this to check off this assignment for you. (4 points)
  2. Choose one of your images that you think would make a successful black and white image (achromatic), desaturate following the above directions. Upload the original image as well as your "Achromatic" image to Flickr. (20 points)
Upload it to FlickR with the Label "Achromatic" and in the description field complete your Critique. (20 points)
  3. Choose one of your images that you think would make be successful with muted or intensified colors. Lower or increase the saturation of the colors using Image>Image Adjustments> Hue/ Saturation. Upload the original image to your Module Set in FlickR as well as your "Saturation" image to Flickr and in the description field complete your Critique. (20 points)
  4. Choose another image that you think would be successful as a monochromatic image (all one color), desaturate and then tone using the above "Toning" directions. Upload the original image as well as your "Monochromatic" (Toned) image to Flickr. (20 points)

Tip: An image that will make a good achromatic (black and white) or monochromatic (only values, lights and darks, of one color) generally starts out with few colors or similar colors. If what "makes the image" is the use of color then it's probably not a strong candidate for these assignments.

Note*You should have 6 images in the Module 7 FlickR Set*
